Earlier this week, the Federal Election Commission (FEC) made it legal for voters to donate to political campaigns via text message. According to ClickZ’s Kate Kaye, “Allowing text donations to political campaigns could increase small donations, which some argue propels political engagement and voter participation.”

While political text contributions could be convenient for campaigns, hefty fees imposed by mobile carriers may reduce the incentive for voters to bother with the new capability. An agreement between the FEC and mobile carriers regarding the cost associated with a political text contribution is anticipated in the next few weeks.
